UNC WILMINGTON 6-11, EASTERN KY. 3-2 (DH)
WILMINGTON NC -- Host UNC Wilmington exploded for seven runs in the first inning of the nightcap and went on to complete a sweep of Eastern Ky., 6-3 and 11-2, in a college baseball doubleheader Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 4-3 on the season with the twin killing and took all three games in the two-day series with the Colonels. EKU fell to 0-3 on its season-opening weekend trip to the North Carolina coast.
In the nightcap, UNCW sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning and scored seven runs on five hits, wrapped around two errors by the Colonels. EKU starter Chip Albright retired just one batter after being tagged for six earned runs on three hits and two walks.
Freshman righthander Jake Mullis (1-0) recorded the win in the second game for the Seahawks, working six innings, allowing two runs on 11 hits. He walked two and struck out five batters. Albright (0-1) took the loss after setting down just one batter, and three other EKU pitchers finished up the contest.
In the first game, senior righthander Anthony Kozol (1-0) was the winner in relief for UNCW, scattering one hit in 1 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out six. Junior transfer Charlie Weatherby collected a save by retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning. EKU's Keith Murnane (0-1) was the loser, allowing three earned runs on three hits in two innings, walking one and fanning one.
Senior rightfielder Mike Foucht went 3-7 with two runs batted in and a pair of doubles to pace the Seahawks, who had seven hits in each game. Senior catcher Daniel Marsh went 3-8 with three RBI's, while sophomore shortstop David McKenna went 2-3, scored twice and drove in a run.
Centerfielder Brad Sizemore had a good day at the plate for the Colonels, going 5-8 in the two games. Second baseman Adam Basil also went 4-7 as EKU had 20 hits in the twinbill.
In the see-saw opener, EKU jumped on top early with an unearned run in the third before UNCW scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, capped by Justin Wishon's two-run single. The Colonels rallied, however, to knot the score at 3-all in the sixth on an RBI double by Jason Sharp and a sacrifice fly by Tom White. But the Seahawks put three runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth to break the game open behind three hits and one error.
The Seahawks travel to Durham NC, Wednesday to face Duke at 3:00 p.m. The Colonels return to action on Saturday, February 26, when they visit Furman in a doubleheader, starting at noon.
