| OVC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Mike Reichert, Sr.,
3B, Cincinnati, Ohio (Morehead State)
Ben Fuller, Jr., OF, Sheboygan, Wisc. (Austin Peay) Reichert batted
.565 (13-23) with two doubles, seven homers, 10 runs scored and 10 RBI's
to lead Morehead State to three wins in five games last week. The senior
third baseman tied a school and OVC record with four homers in a 19-10
win over UT Martin on Sunday, and he tied a MSU mark with five runs scored
in the contest. Fuller batted .600 (12-20) with two doubles, two triples,
two homers, nine runs scored and eight RBI's as Austin Peay won four of
five games, including a three-game sweep of Murray State. The junior had
three games with three or more hits.
OVC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Scott Santa, So., RHP, Newark, Ohio (Eastern
Kentucky)
Santa tossed six shutout innings and allowed just three hits to
lead Eastern Kentucky to a big 2-0 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
The sophomore right-hander limited opponents to a .143 batting average
and walked just one in the contest.
AUSTIN PEAY: The Govs (28-25 overall, 11-10 in OVC) vaulted to
4th place in the OVC standings after a three-game sweep of Murray State
over the weekend. Austin Peay has won 10 of its last 12 league games after
a 1-8 start. Junior outfielder Ben Fuller batted .600 (12-20) with two
doubles, two triples, two homers, eight RBI's and nine runs scored last
week. Both homers came in the Govs' 12-9 win over MSU on Sunday. Freshman
first baseman A. J. Ellis also had a big week, hitting .611 (11-18) with
10 runs scored. He belted his first collegiate homer in the MSU series.
Senior Lance Wampler tied the APSU record for career RBI's with 171. Four
of the RBI's came via a grand slam on Saturday, which was the Govs' fourth
this season. Sophomore left-hander Stephen Pew went 2-0 in the MSU series,
allowing just one earned run over 7.2 innings in relief.
EASTERN ILLINOIS: The Panthers (20-28 overall, 10-10 in OVC) went
1-5 last week, including four losses over the weekend to rival Illinois
State. Three of the defeats were by one run. Third baseman Chris Martin
batted .400 for the week and is riding a 10-game hitting streak. Senior
Matt Marzec upped his career hit total to 229, which is one shy of the
EIU record. Shortstop David Mikes is seven hits shy of becoming the 6th
player in school history to reach 200 in a career. Senior pitcher John
Larson is now 2nd in career strikeouts at EIU with 240. Pitcher Scott Metz
went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 11 innings of work last week. The Panthers
turned 10 double plays in six games last week and top the OVC with 57 for
the year.
EASTERN KENTUCKY: The Colonels (27-22 overall, 17-4 in OVC) stayed
atop the OVC standings after taking two of three in an important road series
at Middle Tennessee. After dropping the opener at MTSU 12-2, sophomore
right-hander Scott Santa and closer Mike Martini combined on a 3-hit shutout
as EKU won the nightcap 2-0. In Game 3, third baseman Jason Sharp and outfielder
Gabe Thomas both homered twice as the Colonels won 11-7. The victory Sunday
was the 600th at EKU for head coach Jim Ward. Sophomore shortstop Kiley
Vaughn hit .526 (10-19) for the week with three doubles, four runs scored
and a pair of RBI's. First baseman Lee Chapman extended his hitting streak
to 16 games over the weekend. Catcher Mike Schneider tied an EKU record
with three homers in a 20-7 win over Wright State on Tuesday. EKU, which
has won all seven OVC series this season, meets 2nd-place Southeast Missouri
this weekend. The Colonels, who lead the Indians by 1.5 games, are looking
for their first OVC title since 1989.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE: The Blue Raiders (30-20 overall, 14-6 in OVC)
went 1-3 last week, including losing two of three at home in a key series
with first-place Eastern Kentucky. Middle Tennessee rolled to a 12-2 win
in Game 1 as Justin Links and Bryan Peck both went 3-4 with a homer and
two RBI's. Sophomore Dewon Brazelton upped his record to 6-3 with a complete-game
seven-hitter. In the nightcap, senior pitcher Jeff Parsons held the Colonels
scoreless through six innings, but EKU rallied for two in the seventh and
won 2-0. On Sunday, MTSU rallied from a 5-0 hole to take a 7-5 lead through
five, but lost 11-7. Peck had a huge week at the plate, batting .667 (10-15)
with five doubles and two homers. He was 8-11 in the EKU series with five
runs scored and four RBI's.
MOREHEAD STATE: The Eagles (22-27-1 overall, 5-16 in OVC) went
3-2 last week, including winning two of three against Tennessee-Martin
in OVC action. Senior third baseman Mike Reichert tied a MSU and OVC record
on Sunday by belting four homers in MSU's 19-10 victory over the Skyhawks.
He finished the game 4-6 with six RBI's and also tied a school mark with
five runs scored. For the week, Reichert hit .565 (13-23) with two doubles,
seven homers, 10 runs scored and 10 RBI's. Outfielder Jason Kennedy, who
hit .550 for the week, was a hit by a pitch for the 11th time this season,
setting a MSU record. Freshman pitcher Chad Parsons tossed a complete-game,
three-hitter in the Eagles' 9-1 win on Saturday. Parsons allowed only an
unearned run and upped his record to 5-2. Freshman Cary Page was 9-18 (.500)
last week. The Eagles tied a school mark with 26 hits versus UTM on Sunday.
MURRAY STATE: The Breds (19-28 overall, 10-10 in OVC) dropped
all five games last week, including three to OVC foe Austin Peay. The defeats
left Murray State in a tie for 5th as they battle for an OVC Tournament
berth. Senior first baseman Justin Varitek had a good week offensively,
batting .474 with four doubles and a pair of homers. He went 6-11 (.545)
in the APSU series with two doubles, two homers, four runs scored and six
RBI's. Senior shortstop Chris Johnson needs 10 hits to tie the MSU season
hits record of 81 set by Craig Delk in 1998. Six Breds had at least two
hits in the team's 12-9 loss to APSU on Sunday. Varitek and Ronnie Seets
each had three in the contest.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI: The Indians (32-14 overall, 15-5 in OVC) won two
of three in their conference series at Tennessee Tech to remain 1.5 games
behind first-place Eastern Kentucky. Southeast, which is trying to earn
its first OVC regular-season title, hosts the Colonels in a three-game
season-ending series this weekend. Senior outfielder Charlie Marino went
9-15 (.600) in the Tech series with a double, two homers and nine RBI's.
Shortstop Zach Borowiak also had a good series, batting .700 (7-10) with
four RBI's. The Indians had 45 hits, including seven homers, in the series
and batted .421 as a team. Southeast has matched its school record with
77 homers this season. More than half have come from seniors Marino (16),
Jeremy Johnson (16) and Darin Kinsolving (14), who are the league's top
three home run hitters.
TENNESSEE-MARTIN: The Skyhawks (9-38 overall, 1-19 in OVC) picked up
their first OVC win of the season Saturday, defeating Morehead State 11-3
in the opening game of their three-game series. Senior outfielder Brian
Baker went 4-4 with a two-run and three-run homer homer. He now has 14
homers for the year and is just three shy of UTM's season record. Ace pitcher
Heath Doyle tossed his 4th complete game of the year in the win and improved
his record to 5-6. The Skyhawks conclude their season May 9-10 with a three-game
series at Tennessee Tech. The games were postponed from last month due
to the team's van accident on March 28.
TENNESSEE TECH: The Golden Eagles (25-25 overall, 7-10 in OVC)
won four of seven during a busy week of action, but slipped to 7th in the
OVC after losing two of three against Southeast Missouri. Tech captured
Game 1 of the Southeast series 9-8 when junior Matt Curtis belted a two-run
homer in the bottom of the 9th. Curtis hit .435 for the week with three
doubles, three homers and 10 RBI's. Senior outfielder Chad Rogers batted
.522 (12-23) for the week with three doubles, a triple, two homers, 10
RBI's and 15 runs scored. He set a school record with six runs scored in
a win over Appalachian State and raised his average 37 points for the week.
Pitcher Mike Fessler set a school record by picking off three Southeast
runners on Sunday. He has 10 pickoffs for the year, which is also a record.
Tech batted .368 with 36 extra base hits last week. Five players have hitting
streaks of 5 games or more. |
