SENIOR DAY ACTIVITIES ON TAP SATURDAY FOR COLONEL BASEBALL TEAM
RICHMOND, Ky. - Senior Day activities will be held Saturday at Eastern Kentucky University for the nine EKU senior baseballers who will be playing the final weekend home games of their careers at Eastern this Saturday when Belmont University visits Eastern's Turkey Hughes Field.
In pre-game ceremonies before Saturday's twinbill gets underway at 1:00 p.m., nine Colonels will be honored. These players include pitchers Corey Eagle, Shane Billau, Mike Martini and Jeff Sharp; infielders Adam Basil, Lee Chapman and Jason Sharp; and outfielders Brad Sizemore and Tom White.
"These guys have meant a lot to our program through these past few years. We hope they will be able to go out on top here soon," said EKU head baseball coach Jim Ward.
EKU will be coming in to the Belmont doubleheader having won nine of its last 10 games, including taking two of three at West Virginia University in mid-week.
"We had some clutch hits over there in that last game (a 10-1 EKU victory). We scored eight of our 10 runs with two outs," Ward said.
"And Corey (Eagle) pitched a really good game. He just allowed six hits, didn't walk anybody and struck out eight. It looks like he is peaking at the right time."
Basil jumped his team-leading batting average back up to .437, going 4-4 in the series finale at WVU, with two runs scored and an RBI. Six Colonels are hitting .300 or better for the season with Chapman knocking on the door at .299.
Those above .300 include freshman designated hitter Adam Crowder (.421), sophomore shortstop Kiley Vaughn (.339), sophomore leftfielder Aaron Williams (.338), sophomore designated hitter Chris Frailly (.323) and senior third baseman Jason Sharp (.316).
Chapman leads the team in homers (9) and RBI's (49), while Basil and Sharp each have 17 doubles to lead the team in that department. Basil tops the Colonels in hits (59), while Vaughn leads the squad in runs scored with 44.
Taking the hill Saturday against Belmont will be two sophomore righthanders, Chip Albright and Scott Santa. Albright is 6-4 and has a 5.60 ERA, while Santa is 5-2 and has recorded a 3.66 ERA. Seven Colonel pitchers have ERA's below 5.00, including Billau, a senior lefthander, 2.35; sophomore righthander Spencer Boley, 2.73; Martini, a senior left-handed reliever, 3.86; sophomore righthander Nic Lively, 4.63; and lefthander Eagle, 4.71.
Eastern stands 24-19 overall and in second place in the OVC with a 15-3 league mark. The Colonels have two, three-game OVC series remaining on the schedule: May 6-7 at Middle Tennessee and May 13-14 at Southeast Missouri before the OVC Tournament, May 18-21, at a site to be determined in the next three weeks.
