MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – Eastern Kentucky used a four run sixth inning to defeat
West
Virginia, 7-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday evening at Hawley
Field.
The deciding third game of the series begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Mountaineer reliever David Maust allowed two hits and three earned runs
in the Eastern
Kentucky sixth to take the loss. He's now 1-2 on the year.
WVU starter Ty Russell limited EKU to one run over four innings before
running into trouble in
the fifth. The Hopkins, S.C. native allowed Gabe Thomas and Chris Frailly
singles to start the
fifth.
Maust entered the game and got catcher Tim Booghier to ground into a double
play, but
Thomas scored on the play.
The lefthander immediately got into trouble in the sixth when he walked
Adam Basil to begin
the frame. A Jason Sharp triple and a Thomas double produced runs for the
Colonels, which
plated four in all to make the score 6-3.
Eastern Kentucky added an insurance run in the eighth.
Todd Brock led the Mountaineers in the nightcap with a pair of doubles.
Kevin Olkowski had
two singles and moved into 10th placed in career hits with 177, passing
Greg Gilbert
(1984-87).
Scott Santa allowed three runs on seven hits through five innings to improve
to 5-2 on the
season.
Spencer Boley pitched four scoreless innings to capture his first save of the season.
The win improves Eastern Kentucky's record to 23-19; West Virginia falls to 20-21.

MORGANTOWN, W.VA.. -- Chris Schmidt smacked three hits and drove in five
runs to lead
West Virginia to a 14-4 win over Eastern Kentucky in the first of two Tuesday
afternoon at
Hawley Field.
Schmidt doubled in the second and seventh and singled in the eighth to
lead West Virginia's
17 hit attack. Second baseman Todd Brock also collected three hits to go
along with his two
RBI.
Every Mountaineer starter recorded hits and six WVU batters registered two or more safeties.
Starter Shane Rhodes went five innings to record his sixth victory of the
season. The
lefthander limited the Colonels to one run on six hits with six strikeouts
and one walk. The
Monkton, Md., native is now 6-3 on the season.
Senior Jim Kirkland pitched the final four innings, allowing three runs
on six hits. Kirkland
fanned eight Eastern Kentucky hitters.
Aaron Williams and Adam Basil collected three hits each for the Colonels,
now 22-19 on the
season.
The victory moves West Virginia's record to an even .500 on the season
at 20-20. Since
starting the season 1-11, West Virginia is 19-9 since.
The second game of the doubleheader is set to begin at 7:05 p.m. and the
contest will air live
on Yahoo! broadcast.com.
