EKU'S BASEBALL TEAM LOOKS TO STAY ATOP THE OVC
RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky University's baseball team will play host to Tennessee Tech University this weekend at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels and the Golden Eagles will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will play at 1:00 p.m. again on Sunday.
EKU will try to extend its lead in the OVC. The Colonels stand at 10-2 and are a game and a half ahead of Murray State in the conference standings. Southeast Missouri is close behind at two games back.
"We're pleased with our progress so far this season," said Eastern head coach Jim Ward.
The Colonels will continue with the pitching rotation of Chip Albright, Scott Santa and Corey Eagle. Albright is 5-2 on the season with a 6.02 ERA. In his last start he threw five innings and picked up the win over Morehead State. Santa is 2-2 on the season with a 4.02 ERA. Eagle is 4-5 on the season and leads the team with 46 strikeouts.
Adam Basil, who is leading the team with a .456 batting average, has been hampered by an injury but is expected to be at full strength by Saturday.
Pre-season All-American Lee Chapman, who has collected six home runs and 31 RBI's, has a strained hamstring and won't be at full strength but should still see some action.
The Golden Eagles are 15-15 on the season and 4-4 in the OVC.
"They have considerably improved over last season. Their pitching has improved the most," said Ward.
Two Eastern wins over Morehead State last weekend left Ward sitting at 899 Division I coaching victories, 19th among active coaches. The Colonels' first attempt to earn him number 900 was rained out Tuesday at the University of Kentucky.
"I have had a very satisfying career and I appreciate the fact that I have had a chance to get those victories," said Ward.
The Colonels will try again Wednesday night when they travel to Bowling Green to face Western Kentucky University at 7:00 p.m. EST.
The Colonels are 15-16 overall this season and have won seven of their last 10 games.
