COLONEL BASEBALL TEAM PUTS UNDEFEATED OVC RECORD ON LINE VS. MSU
RICHMOND, Ky. - Coach Jim Ward's Eastern Kentucky University baseball team puts its undefeated (6-0) record in Ohio Valley Conference play on the line this weekend as the Murray State Thorobreds come to Turkey Hughes Field for a three-game set.
EKU has swept both weekends of OVC play thus far, taking Austin Peay at home and defeating UT Martin on the road last week. Murray State comes in having won six of its last seven games. The 'Breds stand 9-15 overall and 4-1 in league play.
"It is very difficult to sweep a three-game series in today's baseball, so we feel very fortunate to have done it twice this year," said Ward. "But we know Murray State has excellent personnel and will be very competitive, not only in this series, but throughout the season."
Ward, whose Colonels stand 11-14 overall, said sometimes averages on paper do not tell the whole story.
"I believe our statistics were a little misleading early on. We had played some good teams, all on the road, and our stats were not where they usually were at that point of the season, although we felt we had a good team," said Ward. "But we're playing better defense and throwing strikes now, and we feel our offense will improve as we go along."
Senior second baseman Adam Basil continues to lead the Colonels in batting with his .470 average. He has also scored 26 runs, has 12 doubles, two home runs and 26 RBI's. Sophomore second baseman Kiley Vaughn continued his torrid hitting last week and has a .363 batting average.
Ward is expected to have the following pitching rotation for the Murray State series: sophomore righthander Chip Albright (3-2, 6.25 ERA) and sophomore Scott Santa (2-1, 3.08 ERA) in Saturday's twinbill, with senior lefthander Corey Eagle (3-4, 5.12 ERA) slated to pitch Sunday's nine-inning single game.
