COLONELS SWEEP AUSTIN PEAY, GO ON ROAD FOR NEXT SEVEN GAMES

RICHMOND, Ky. - Following a three-game sweep of the Austin Peay State University Governors, coach Jim Ward's Eastern Kentucky University baseball Colonels hit the road for Spring Break, playing the next seven games away from EKU's Turkey Hughes Field.

Eastern will play two single games Tuesday and Wednesday at Georgia Tech, at Union (TN) University Thursday and a three-game Ohio Valley Conference set at UT Martin next weekend. EKU closes the road swing with a Mar. 28 game at the University of Cincinnati before returning home for an OVC weekend set of games against Murray State, April 1-2.

EKU got its sweep of the Governors with a come-from-behind 8-7 win over APSU which was highlighted with a two-run double to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning by Colonel third baseman Jason Sharp.

"We felt good when Jason was up there because he's been swinging the bat real well," said Ward. "He was able to turn on the ball and hit it down the left field line. With their leftfielder pulled around toward left center, Lee (Chapman) was able to score from first with the winning run."

Sophomore righthander Spencer Boley came on in relief of starter Chip Albright to keep APSU at bay while EKU rallied from a 7-5 deficit. Boley went three and two-thirds innings, allowing just two hits, while walking one and striking out two, to pick up his first win in his first decision of the 2000 season.

"Boley came up big. We needed to stop them right there in the sixth and he did the job," said Ward, as his club won its sixth game in the last eight contests to go 8-10 on the season and 3-0 in the OVC.

Sharp, who also clubbed a three-run home run in the third inning, had five RBI's. Shortstop Kiley Vaughn led EKU at the plate with a 3-4 afternoon. Second baseman Adam Basil, first baseman Lee Chapman, rightfielder Gabe Thomas and Sharp each had two hits.

The Eastern pitching staff, which held Austin Peay scoreless Saturday for an amazing 23 innings in a doubleheader sweep of the Govs (1-0 in 16 innings and 3-0 for seven innings), saw its team ERA fall to 5.00 on the season.

Five Colonels have ERA's below 4.00, led by Boley who has not allowed a run this season in his two appearances in 6.2 innings of work. Sophomore righthander Nic Lively is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA, while senior left-handed reliever Mike Martini is 0-2 with a 3.29 ERA, senior lefty Shane Billau is at 3.38 with an 0-0 record and sophomore righthander Scott Santa is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA.

Basil leads Eastern regulars at the plate with his .550 batting average, followed by Vaughn at .382 and Thomas at .344.
