COLONEL PITCHERS WHITEWASH GOVS FOR 23 INNINGS

RICHMOND, Ky. - Paced by an unbelievable and unheard of 23 innings of shutout baseball, the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels began Ohio Valley Conference play on a good note, sweeping the Austin Peay State University Governors, 1-0 in 16 innings and 3-0 in a seven-inning nightcap, in both team's opening conference doubleheader of the season.

EKU got 9.1 innings of six-hit shutout baseball from starter Scott Santa, 5.0 innings of three-hit scoreless relief from Mike Martini and 1.2 innings from Nic Lively to secure the 1-0 win in the opener as Lively moved his record to 2-0 on the year.

A two-out fly ball off the bat of Colonel rightfielder Gabe Thomas was misplayed into a run-scoring two-base error by rightfielder D. W. Blakeman to score the game's only run in the bottom of the 16th inning.

EKU senior lefthander Corey Eagle pitched the complete game in the nightcap, giving up just three hits while striking out five to run his record to 2-4. Colonel second baseman Adam Basil knocked in two runs for the Colonels as they moved to 7-10 overall and 2-0 in the OVC.

APSU, who came in to today's action with a seven-game winning streak, dropped to 13-7 overall and 0-2 in the league.
