The Mansfield, MO native began his collegiate playing career at Jefferson Junior College (MO) as a second baseman.  Mallernee spent his sophomore season as a catcher at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK.  He finished his catching career at Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, MO where he earned his physical education degree and was named Academic All-American.

Mallarnee is engaged to Carrie Stratton of Mountain Grove, MO and they plan to be married in January.
